Alison Widdis, mother of driver
Bret Widdis, has been driving
for as long as Bret has been
living.
Alison raced
in the Upper Peninsula Mud Drag Association (UPMDA) for many
years. In 1988 Alison took home the U.P. Stump Jumpers Mud
Drag 2nd place trophy. The following year she would obtain the
1989 Pelkie Mud Drags Class I 1st place trophy. Also in 1989
she took home the U.P. Chevy Dealers Association Class I 1st place
prize home. She also won the coveted 1989 Class I Championship
of Champion Mud Drag. She would also take home the 1990 U.P.
Mud Drag Association 3rd place trophy. Alison was very
instrumental in the growth of the UPMDA during the early
nineties when her husband, Boyd, was the president of the
group. The very last season Alison raced the truck she would
win the championship in a truck that had sat for two years!
One interesting story that involves
Alison's great driving ability was during a mud drag event.
Boyd and Alison drove the same truck in the mud drag events.
As Boyd raced the truck he blew out the power steering on the
machine. Alison, by luck of the draw, pulled the spot directly
after Boyd. She was forced to drive the truck with no power
steering. With a pat on the back from Boyd, she jumped in the
truck and ended up scoring the fastest time of the night on
her run!
Alison also raced off-road and finished 8th
out of 111 cars at Crandon, Wisconsin in the World's
Championships in their 25th anniversary.
Alison also
won 2nd place in the Kinross Speedway Ladies Powder Puff in
2000. Alison has been recognized numerous times for her
volunteer work as a scorekeeper for the GLRKA (Great Lakes
Race Kart Association).
